None of us has been told who will fight today. I can’t help feeling a sense of relief that Ny’s fight is finished and she is still alive and well. I don’t even care if I end up in a life or death battle again today, as long as she’s okay.

I follow Ny out into the gardens after breakfast. She hasn’t spoken to anyone, and hasn’t even looked at me this morning. We are supposed to be at the Mutua Arena in an hour, but she escapes into the tall walls of the garden maze. I follow her scent, weaving left and right as she does, and I find her sitting alone on a wooden bench.

“Ny? Is everything alright?” I sound desperate to even my own ears.

She looks up at me with a start, as if surprised to see me here. “Oh, I’m sorry, Caz. I didn’t sleep much last night and I wanted a moment of peace before having to face… you-know-who.”

I know exactly who. My father isn’t someone that I want to see daily, so I understand why she is hesitant to go. I sit beside her, reaching my hand out to grab hers, and thankfully she lets me. It hits me that she doesn’t have a single bruise on the fingers that were broken just yesterday.

“How did you heal, Ny? Is this part of your…” I lower my voice to a whisper as I look around for eavesdroppers. “Your new magic?”

“No, I had help.” She plays with my palm, circling her fingers around my skin. I hold back the shiver that threatens to come over me from such a simple touch.

“Who healed you? Only a few people can heal others so quickly, and I don’t think we have any on the castle grounds.” Her calmness has me worried and I want to drag whatever she’s hiding out of her.

She looks around us in the same way I had moments ago, and then into my eyes. The perfect peak of her top lip calls to me as she speaks. “Caz, I hope you know how much you mean to me.”

My heart leaps in my chest, but I can tell she’s still keeping something hidden. “I hope it’s half as much as what you mean to me. I can’t imagine not knowing you, Nyomi.”

I can hear the flutter of her breath as I say the words, and I raise my hand to touch her soft cheek. She closes her eyes against my touch. “I couldn’t sleep last night, so I decided to come to your bedroom.”

Holy Unity.

“You came into my room?”

She shakes her head. “I was about to, but I had this feeling like something was calling me downstairs. I went out through the servant entrance and a faerie man stopped me.”

My eyes go wide as I assess Ny’s body for any new injury from a faerie attack, but she is perfectly unharmed. “What did he do? Did he say anything to you?”

“He… Well, he said the Fae rulers are planning some attack.
